This guide will assist you in locating and organizing information necessary to your project.

Types of information sources

You may retrieve information from short reference material (encyclopedias and dictionaries), books, printed and electronic journal articles, databases (bibliographic, images and complete text), audiovisual material, the internet.

Searching for information

To search for information, you may use:

1. The library catalogue You will be able to find out which books, journals, audiovisual material or copies of artwork are available in the library.

2. The printed and electronic sources for short reference (general and thematic encyclopedias, language dictionaries and thematic dictionaries, indexes, guides etc.).

Access to information regarding historic periods and art movements, styles, terminology, artist biographies etc, but also bibliography concerning all these matters is available.

3. The bibliographic databases

Here you will find bibliographic references regarding books, theses, essay catalogues as well as article summaries, for further research etc.

4. The image databases

Here, you will find artwork from several museums around the world, dated from antiquity until this day.

5. The complete text databases You will be able to retrieve entire articles in electronic format.

6. Selected Network Links

Here you will find selected addresses for art, museum, general catalogue and art directory libraries etc.

7. Electronic books

Complete texts of books can be found in electronic format.

Evaluation of Internet sources

The Internet consists of unlimited information resources. For a concrete research to be carried out, it is necessary that all information resources be evaluated in such a way that only reliable information is drawn.

To evaluate internet resources check to see:

  1. That the source was created / published from a valid organization (university, institute, not personal webpage)
  2. That the source provided is not biased either ideologically or nor financially
  3. That the source includes a date of creation and of the last update made.
  4. That there is a webpage monitor
  5. That the information provided includes an author signature and title
  6. That there are bibliography references
  7. Which topics are covered and to what extent
  8. That no advertisements appear on the webpage
  9. That no grammatical and syntax errors have occurred
